What Happens During a Fine Art Portrait Experience in New York?
My fine art portrait experience in New York moves through four stages: a personal consultation, a styling and preparation call, the guided portrait experience itself, and an ordering session where you choose your finished artwork. Most women complete the full process across two to three appointments over four to six weeks. I have guided women through this experience for years, and every stage exists for one reason: to help you feel recognized as the woman you are today.
I get asked about this often, because “fine art portrait” sounds different from a typical family photographer or a quick studio session, and it is. I don’t book you in for twenty minutes and hand you a link to some photos. This is a considered process, and I want you to know exactly what it involves before you commit to it.
What Happens During the Consultation?
The consultation is a conversation. We talk about the season of life you are in, why you reached out now, the importance of doing your portrait session now, and what you want this artwork to reflect. I use this conversation to plan wardrobe, location, and mood before a single photograph is taken.
Most women arrive at this call with a vague idea, something like “I want to feel like myself again.” That is enough. My job in this call is to translate that feeling into a plan: what you will wear, how we will light you, and what kind of images will actually reflect what you described. And importantly, how you plan to enjoy your portraits as a daily recognition.
How Should I Prepare Before the Experience?
Preparation is guided, not left up to guesswork. You will receive a wardrobe guide, a timeline for hair and makeup, and the flow of your experience day, and direct answers to any questions in the weeks before your date. I provide this guidance so nothing is left to chance on the day.
The most common worry I hear is “I don’t know how to pose.” You won’t need to. I give direction throughout, allowing you to feel comfortable and seen with no need to perform, one small adjustment at a time, so the movement always looks natural on camera even if it feels unfamiliar in the moment.

What Actually Happens on the Day of the Experience?
The experience itself typically is 5-6 hours, including hair and makeup, a guided portrait session, and a design consultation. We slowly go through several looks, and I check the back of the camera with you along the way, so you can see how the work is building in real time that we are creating together.
One thing I have noticed after years of doing this work: the women who arrive most nervous are almost always the ones who tell me, by the end, that it was the most confident they have felt in front of a camera. That shift usually happens around the halfway point, once the direction starts to feel familiar rather than performative.
What Kind of Artwork Will I Receive?
Directly following your portrait session experience, you will have your design consultation to view your images and select your finished pieces. I create museum-quality fine art prints, wall art, and custom albums rather than a simple digital download.
This is where the process differs most from a standard photo session. You are not choosing from a folder of five hundred similar images. We select the collection together, and the final artwork is produced to be displayed and kept, not scrolled past on a phone.

Why Choose a Fine Art Experience Over a Standard Portrait Session?
A standard portrait session is transactional: you book a time slot, stand in front of a backdrop, and receive a set of digital images. My fine art portrait experience is built around recognition. Photography is the medium here, but the actual outcome is the experience of being seen and honored, with the artwork as a lasting daily reminder.
I wrote about this idea at length in my book, Essence of Women, because it is the reason I do this work at all. A photograph that just looks nice is easy to produce. A portrait that a woman keeps on her wall for the next twenty years, because it actually reflects who she was in that season, takes intention at every stage.
If you are in the New York area and considering a fine art portrait experience, I would encourage you to start with the artistry photography page to see examples of the work, or explore what a session looks like in Manhattan. When you are ready, you can contact me to schedule your consultation.
